The Art of Technical Decisions

Every codebase is a graveyard of technical decisions. Some were brilliant. Others were compromises. Most were made with incomplete information.
The Illusion of Perfect Choices
We like to think engineers make rational decisions based on data. Sometimes we do. But often:
- We choose what we know
- We choose what feels safe
- We choose what someone recommended on Twitter
What Actually Matters
After 4+ years of building, here’s what I’ve learned matters:
1. Team Capacity
The best architecture is what your team can maintain. A brilliant system nobody understands is technical debt.
2. Business Timeline
Perfect is the enemy of done. Ship something that works, then iterate.
3. Real User Impact
Will this change actually matter to someone using the product? Or is it engineer satisfaction?
My Framework
Before choosing a tool or pattern, I ask:
- Can a junior developer understand it?
- Can we debug it at 2am?
- Does it serve the user or the builder?
The answer is usually clear.
Technical decisions are human decisions. Make them with that in mind.
